Very early on in Primary School we used this series as well, I can remember the later ones clearer than these ones.

I'm so pleased that you have taken the time to do this. It was great to see these books after so long. So many memories came back to me. Even my old teachers smell of pipe tobacco.

OH WOW WEEE! I've been trying to remember what these book were called for AGES. I remember loving the silver edged one with purple and was very upset when I had advanced to the gold books, because I didn't like the colour gold. ha ha ha, wonderful memories! ;-)

One of the best reading schemes I have ever used. Excellent way of introducing phonics. Have used them with my infant classes, my own children and now grandchildren! The youngest struggling with the current phonics has leaped ahead with Through the Rainbow. Thank goodness I kept my copies.

I learned with this scheme when they first came out, all shiny and new, we had to wash our hands before sitting down to read. I still do this... i treasure books as i was taught and have read for two degrees... a longway down the line from these meagre beginings but still remembered with love.
I loved these! At teacher training college they totally rubbished this scheme in favour of the, then quite recently published, Ginn 360. Ginn certainly had more variety of text, which was great for the top readers, but poorer readers needed more repetition to build confidence - which this scheme gave!
Actually at the school I was at we moved on from this scheme straight onto the Ginn 360 ones.
Learnt to read with the 'Red'Book and haven't seen a copy for over 40 years. But just love the memory of the pictures (in the Wendy House) and the Font. It was great when I suddenly realized I could actually read the words! Does anybody have a picture of or copy of a Red book. Haven't ever seen one anywhere else.
I'm sure I had these books in infant school; we started with red books and moved on up through the colours, but.. I remember it as a scheme with one big reader and several supplemental thin books which you had to read before being allowed to move onto the next colour? Also these seem to look different to how I remember them?
Wonderful! I came here after reading a Janet and John thread and realising it was a bit before my time tho I read my sisters' Janet and Johns. I was SO BIGHEADED ABOUT BEING ON THE SILVER ETC BOOKS BEFORE THE OTHERS. OH DEAR.
I recently found one of the Violet books at a bootfair in Gillingham,Kent,UK! I bought it for 20p. Such happy memories reading these books in the 80's at school.
I remember that Silver Book One 'Rainbow's End' - much deserved closure after working your way through 7 colours _and_ the 'Rainbow' colour.

The running along books before the teacher would allow you to move onto the nect colour.
Those were my favourite reading days!
I remember the class teacher in 1980 (I was 4) reading us a story about a witch and wizards from one of these books. I always wanted to find it. We used Kathy and Mark to learn to read but the gold and silver books were also used.
